Almeria Cofrade and the Semana Santa
The Almeria Cofrade is the official Confraternity of the Andalusian City of Almeria in Spain. This Confraternity is a catholic association who promotes services in the name of Christ, especially on christian Holidays. The name Cofrade literally means Brotherhood. This tradition traits back until the middle ages. This is displayed by the historic outfit of those cofrade members wearing the traditional Capirote, a long cape with with mask covered by a pointed hat. The Capirote of every guild has a different color by which the single fraternities distinct themselves. However, the single confraternitiy guilds of each city belong to a nation wide union, which behaves like a franchise.
The Semana Santa in Almeria
On national holidays this Cofrade of Almeria organises processions and parades. The biggest of those holidays celebrated in Andalusia is the Semana Santa, which means 'Holy Weak' and takes part one week before Easter from Par Sunday until Easter Sunday. On every day of this particular week the Almeria Cofrade proceeds different rituals and traditions which are witnessed by all the inhabitants of Almeria or Almerida. Therefore the cofrade members march through the streets of Almeria carrying a big cross and praise Christ. This prodcedure takes place in a similar manner in all the other Andalusian cites like Sevilla, Malaga or Cadiz.
